概要 | Understanding self-continuity across time is crucial for grasping the nature and development of personal identity. This study addresses a gap in psychological research by developing the Past Self-Continuity Scale, which measures self-continuity from both narrative and essentialist perspectives. Across four studies with Japanese university students, adults, and high school students, we validated this scale. It distinguishes between narrative continuity—linking past and present selves through a coherent life story—and essentialist continuity, which emphasizes the enduring core attributes of the self. Findings suggest these two strategies are distinct and may vary across developmental stages. This scale offers a new tool for exploring how self-continuity relates to identity formation and well-being. |
