概要 | This study examined vocabulary sizes of high school and university learners of English, and the relationship between their vocabulary sizes and success rates in guessing meanings of unknown words. It was found that Japanese learners know the most frequent 1,000 English words until they become 11th grade students. Then they learn words in the 2,000, 3,000, and 4,000 word-levels. 2,000 lemmas are needed for 80 % of success in guessing the meanings of the words in the textbooks for 11th graders. 3,000 lemmas are needed for 100 % of success. |
