概要 | Self-continuity/discontinuity refers to the perceived connection or disconnection between one’s past and present, shaped by narrative (integration vs. irrelevance) and essentialist (stability vs. heterogeneity) perspectives. This longitudinal study of 203 Japanese university students examined causal relationships among these aspects using a cross-lagged model. Results showed that narrative-based continuity reduced irrelevance-based discontinuity, and stability-based continuity reduced heterogeneity-based discontinuity. Moreover, narrative aspects influenced essentialist ones: continuity increased stability, and discontinuity increased heterogeneity. These findings reveal that self-continuity/discontinuity is multidimensional and causally interrelated, offering new insight into its psychological structure and potential for mental health support. |
