| 概要 | This study examined how two perspectives on self-continuity—the essentialist (focused on stability) and the narrative (focused on meaning-making)—differ in their psychological associations. Thirty-seven Japanese university students were assigned to descriptive tasks to activate either the essentialist or narrative perspective, followed by questionnaires. Results showed that self-continuity was negatively related to temporal comparison orientation only under the essentialist perspective, suggesting assimilation of past and present selves. In contrast, self-continuity was positively related to a receptive attitude toward the past only under the narrative perspective. These findings suggest that the two perspectives reflect distinct dimensions of self-continuity. |
